The Hookerization of America
Being the mother of four girls I have watched over the years as clothes, especially for girls, have become more and more slutty, slovenly, and dare I say it more Hooker-lite. I would say this is due mainly to the explosion of Wal Mart as one of the major retailers in this country, but that would be a lie. Many other more up scale stores are just as bad or even worse.
Many I'm sure defend this trend with the "Children are just little adults, they should be able to dress as they like " mantra. That's one of the main reason childhood obesity and diabetes is on the rise, galloping away, as it were, with the childhood of our posterity. The PARENT is responsible for the feeding, clothing and education ( yes, you are responsible) of their children. You decide what they eat, when, how much and where. You decide what they wear. They are looking to YOU to make the right decisions for them. I am talking about children here, not adolescents and teenagers. If you have taught them correctly by the time they reach adolescence they will make good choices at least as often as adults do,(not always a good thing but human) and they need to practice making some decisions so they are better at it by the time they are out on their own.
If you allow young girls to dress like this why would they dress differently when they are teenagers. What is cute (I have a hard time thinking this is cute) on a 4 year old could be dangerous on a 14 year old.

It may be unfair but the fact is people judge you by your appearance. They won't swim through the nonsense to get to know you, they'll just assume you are what you present yourself as. If you present yourself as "fast, loose, slutty, or skanky" that is how people will see you. We don't have the time or energy today to sift through the miasma to find the "real" you, because we are reasonably sure we'll find what we see.
Unfair, maybe but the fact is while you can't judge a book by it's cover, you can reasonably judge a person by their appearance. There's an old adage "if you're not selling don't advertise." It seems to be to be common sense, which of course went out of style sometime in the late 1950's.

Deborah, with men, you have to judge by their appearance AND their demeanor, I think. I've known some extremely well-dressed immoral shysters in my time and some rather dumpy looking company presidents who I'd sail the Earth with.
Your title is not to be confused with knitting or crocheting! :-) ~Jimmy
Your right of course. With young girls though parents are putting them in a precarious situation.
I have often wondered (due to my lack of experience in hooking up- good girls, back in the day, of which I was one didn't do that) if a man should have the forethought and right to card his intended partner. I've seen 14 year olds that look 30 to me. How would one know, especially dressed like "ladies of the evening"?
Of course the safe bet is to not indulge but especially today people aren't interested in safe, they want what they want when they want it.
I personally like to knit, crochet, and have even hooked rugs but that's a whole other story.
