Wow! I really mean that, WOW!
So this is what one
gets when one is successful at telling people what they want to hear. Well yes, I know that politicians make money that way, and celebrities, and some authors, and snake oil salesmen of every variety, but I always thought ministers were different. I guess I was confused by the whole "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." Or, "Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and
give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions."
Now I must say that I like my creature comforts. I don't want to live in a hovel and I don't believe religious persons should have to either. That said, I also don't think massive hypocrisy should be tolerated no matter where one finds it.
The real issue here is not the price of the house, or who owns it. It's not the 10 million dollar credit line that goes with it. The real issue here is the tenor of the vitriol spewed by this pastor at "black" and "white" members of the middle class. Those who want what apparently he is going to get. Well you might say he earned it, he deserves it. Well I don't see too many houses being given away to white people or blacks, no matter what there circumstances are. Even Habitat for Humanity doesn't simply give houses away. People have to WORK for them.
But some may say, some people have more advantages than others. That is always true. Life is not fair, yes you heard it hear first. It isn't what you start out with, it's more what you do with those things you do have, that will be a measure of your success. One could go to school at Harvard not get as good an education as you would get at your local technical college.
How can that be, you may ask? Your education (and just about everything else in life) depends entirely on the effort YOU put into it. The greatest teacher, most eloquent pastor, the greatest actor, writer, or politician can't just pour information into your head. You must participate or you gain nothing. So then, what is the difference between say an Andrew Carnegie and Joe O'Smucky? Drive I guess, willingness to do jobs others don't want to do, willingness to do what's necessary to advance yourself and the wisdom to realize things won't always go your way.
Any one in this country has the opportunity to be successful. No one is refused education, There are grants, loans and scholarships available to those willing to seek them. The only sure way to fail is to not make the effort, to wait for someone to give it to you because, you deserve it, you're entitled, you're the exception?
A very wise parent once counseled his son, "Forget yourself and go to work". Word to live by I think. Maybe then pastors and hate mongers like Wright won't be able to gull the masses. They will have to find other work, because their affinity for the message of Jesus Christ seems somewhat inconsistent.
